background & history

the past ...

Abbeycrest was established in 1979 by Michael Lever and Peter Rosenberg, and grew rapidly to become the UK’s leading supplier of gold products to the jewellery trade. In 1985 it joined the Unlisted Securities Market, achieving a full listing in 1988.

In 1989 Abbeycrest moved into gemset jewellery with the acquisition of a Birmingham based manufacturer, Gallery Jewellers Limited. 1996 saw a major re-structuring of the Group’s operations. G & A Limited became the commercial headquarters for the Group, providing a single administration and distribution point from its purpose built premises in Leeds, Yorkshire.

Next came the acquisition of Thai manufacturer Essex International pcl and the establishment of a new company Dynamic Creations Limited in Hong Kong, giving the Group improved access to Far Eastern resources, and a higher degree of control over quality and manufacturing.

Further domestic acquisitions include, in early 2001 – Brown & Newirth Limited, recognised as the leading manufacturer in the highly specialised area of wedding rings.

February 2003 saw the launch of Abbeycrest Thailand Limited, with the opening of a purpose built £2m factory in Lamphun, further strengthening the Group’s Far Eastern manufacturing capacity. The subsequent merger of Abbeycrest Thailand and Essex International pcl brings all Thai based manufacturing operations onto one site.

This degree of vertical integration has enabled the Group and it’s customers to benefit from highly competitive Far East manufacturing combined with UK design and engineering expertise.

the present ...

In January 2008 the Group commence the first phase of a business review and restructuring programme - 'straight edge'.  Following that review the Group's activities have been restructured into a small number of strategic "business units" with a steering group acting to ensure any synergies between them are fully exploited.

The business units are structured along the lines of supply ( Abbeycrest Thailand and Abbeycrest Hong Kong - Formerly Dynamic Creations Limited) and demand ( Abbeycrest International - Formerly G&A Limited). Each business unit now being led by lean and responsive management team with effective decision making capabilities and requisite core competencies.

September 2008 saw changes to the main Group Board. Michael Lever resigned from the company on 31 August 2008 and Simon Ashton took over as the Group Chairman.
